Most of the game is from a top-down perspective. Interestingly, in the game, Afghanistan is controlled by the Soviet Union. Rambo's former commanding Officer, Colonel Sam Trautman, is captured in Afghanistan. Rambo, who has been called out of retirement for one last mission. The storyline of the game is similar to that of the movie: The player takes control of Vietnam Veteran and Green Beret John J. The game was then produced for Sega Mega Drive and finally ZX Spectrum, Commodore Amiga, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC.
The PC video game, which was originally produced for the Sega Master System, was released soon after the movie. Rambo III was a major motion picture and the third installment in the popular movie series that starred Sylvester Stallone.
